What the rounds actually are
An international hiring process is usually four to six conversations over three to six weeks. Candidates prepare intensely for the coding round and get eliminated in the twenty-minute recruiter call. Knowing what each stage is for is most of the advantage.
What to do
The recruiter screen is a real round
Twenty to thirty minutes checking whether you can communicate, whether your experience matches, your notice period, your time-zone overlap and your salary expectation. Prepare a ninety-second summary of yourself and a salary answer before this call, not during it.
The technical screen tests floor, not ceiling
It exists to filter out people who cannot code at all. Be clear, be correct, be communicative. Brilliance is not required here and often backfires.
Treat a take-home as production code
Tests, a README, clean commits, and a note on what you would do with more time. Respect the stated time limit and say what you cut. Take-homes are frequently where an unknown candidate overtakes a familiar one.
The panel tests depth and collaboration
System design, deeper coding, and a values or behavioural conversation. Different interviewers, one shared document afterwards. Consistency across the rounds matters more than any single performance.
The hiring manager is deciding about risk
Can this person operate without supervision across a time-zone gap. Bring evidence of ownership: something you drove, something that failed and what you did next. Always have three questions of your own ready.
What goes wrong
- Naming a salary number first in the recruiter call without any research. Ask for their range; it is a normal question.
- Spending twenty hours on a four-hour take-home. It signals poor judgement about scope, which is itself the test.
- Having no questions at the end. It reads as indifference.
- Contradicting yourself between rounds. The interviewers compare notes in writing.
